Tonight MYC were pleased to welcome Mundesley Youth FC U15’s to the new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) who will be training at the facility on a weekly basis.

The MUGA is available for groups, families and sports clubs to book and soon there will be netball and tennis equipment available for bookings.

Jackie Thornton MYC fundraiser adds “Its fantastic to see so many people already using the MUGA with informal football kick about’s at the weekend and now structure coaching sessions with local clubs taking place. All the MYC committee have worked so hard to turn a derelict piece of land into a great community facility. We would like to thank the local community who have played a massive role in achieving this”.

This week the MYC group assembled for the big light switch on following installation of the MUGA floodlights. The contractors have been on site for the past 3 weeks and will be completing the new facility in just a few more days. They will then return in the Spring to colour the court green.

The MUGA is a tarmac sports court (37m x 21m) with permanent Football goals and Basketball rings for “Open Access”. Netball posts and Tennis nets will be stored in the locked storage area but are available for “Bookings Slots”. The facility also has floodlights that can be used for just £2 per hour.

When the facility opens it will have times for “Open Access” (just turn up and use) or “Booking Slots” to ensure you have exclusive use. Mundesley Parish Council and MYC want to make sure the facility is used by individuals and families as well as community groups so for 2015 all bookings will be FREE.

To find out the interest in “Booking Slots” we are undertaking two surveys, one to GROUPS and one to INDIVIDUALS / FAMILIES. So please take a few minutes to click on the link below to complete one of the questionnaires (10 short questions) by Monday 15th Dec.

Work will be starting very soon to construct a brand new multi-use games area (MUGA) in Mundesley.

The MUGA is the final phase of a four part development project, led by Mundesley Youth and Community (MYC), which has turned a piece of disused land, owned by Mundesley Parish Council, into a community hub for residents and visitors. The first three phases of the project have already been successfully completed, providing a children’s play area, skate park and outdoor gym.

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund panel awarded £45,000 towards the project in March 2013, and in April 2014 MYC announced that they had successfully raised the full £121,650 cost. In addition to the Big Society Fund award, other funding bodies include Sport England Inspired Facility Fund (£50,000), Victory Housing Trust (£5,000), Mundesley Golf Club (£2,000), Geoffrey Watling Charity (£2,000), Shell UK – Bacton Gas Site (£2,000), North Norfolk Youth Advisory Board (£500), Norwich City Football Club Fans Community Cash Back (£500), Tesco (£500) and a staggering £14,150 has been raised by Mundesley Youth and Community through local fundraising.

Jackie Thornton, Committee Member for MYC, said: “We have gained so much fantastic support from people who have provided grant funding, donated to the project or have volunteered their time to make this project happen and we are so grateful.

“This project is all about partnerships working with Mundesley Parish Council to provide the best facilities for local residents and visitors. We are sure the MUGA will get so much use that it will be huge asset to the village”.

Christopher West, Chairman of Mundesley Parish Council, said: “We have been working closely with Mundesley Youth and Community since 2009 to develop facilities that improve our village and make it a great place to live. Together we have achieved so much and we will ensure that the MUGA is as successful as the play area, skatepark and outdoor gym.”

Wyndham Northam, NNDC Cabinet Member said: “Big Society Fund awards are granted to enable local communities to take greater ownership for their immediate area and am delighted to see that in action in Mundesley.

“The development of the MUGA is a wonderful example of a community coming together and working closely with other groups for the benefit of local people.  The transformation of the disused land has been remarkable, and as a great addition to the children’s play area, the skatepark and the outdoor gym, the MUGA will be a wonderful community asset for everyone to enjoy.”

It is anticipated that the MUGA will open in mid-October.

For more information on how to book or use the new MUGA facility, please see the MUGA section on the web site.

MYC would like to thank the generous support of Shell UK at our local Bacton Gas Site for supporting the MUGA project.

After fundraising and applying for grants for over the past year the final £2,000 will ensure that the MUGA is built this year. Keep an eye out for more information on how to book or use the new facility.

The group’s long term vision to develop a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) that could be used by the whole community for a wide range of activities has taken another step closer following the news.

Jackie Thornton MYC Volunteer Fundraiser explains “the success of all the MYC projects so far has been down to the community spirit, volunteers and our local resident’s willingness to accept that different people in our community have different needs that should be supported. We are so pleased to receive this grant and we are now just £15,000 short of gaining the total £123,000 to build the new facility.

She added “Throughout we have tried to talk to as many people as possible, finding out what they need and then trying to find the funding or fundraised to make it happen. It’s not always easy and takes a lot of hard work from the committee. However it’s so rewarding to see so many visitors and locals using the facilities, it all helps to make our village a better place to live and visit”.

By developing the new MUGA the group aim to work in partnership to help more people get involved in sport and keep them participating in a range of sports whilst increasing people’s health and cohesion within the local community. The MUGA will provide opportunities for Tennis, Football, Netball, Basketball and other community events and activities and will be managed by Mundesley Youth and Community in partnership with Mundesley Parish Council.
